From Digital to Intelligent: Understanding the Transformation Journey
What each stage of the journey actually means, and how to tell which one you are in.
What each stage of the journey actually means, and how to tell which one you are in.
“Digital transformation” covers so much ground that it has stopped being useful as a description. Breaking it into stages makes it possible to say where an organization actually is and what the next concrete step should be.
01 Digitalise — Manual to Digital
Processes that live in email, spreadsheets and people’s heads become defined digital workflows. You are here if the honest answer to “how does this process work?” is “it depends who you ask”.
02 Connect — Disconnected to Connected
Systems, data and workflows are joined into a foundation. You are here if your processes are digital but data is re-keyed between tools and every new integration is a project.
03 Enable AI — Connected to AI-enabled
AI is introduced where it augments people and automates work, with a human on exceptions. You are here if your data is reachable and you are ready to move the first repetitive work off people.
04 Intelligent — AI-enabled to Intelligent
Connected systems and data become adaptive operations — prioritization, routing and decisions adjust to what is happening now. You are here if AI is in the operational loop, not just in a side tool.
05 Scale — Intelligent to Scaled
What worked in one team becomes how the organization operates, with governance and continuous improvement. Few organizations are fully here, and that is fine — the journey is walked one process at a time.
The point
You do not need to be at stage 5 everywhere. You need to know which stage each important process is in, and move the ones that matter to the next stage.
