Ask where a transformation programme actually spends its effort and the answer is usually integration: getting systems that were never designed to talk to each other to support one coherent process.

The point-to-point trap

Connect enough systems directly and you get a mesh nobody can reason about. Every change ripples, outages are mysteries, and adding a partner means another bespoke integration.

A layer in the middle

Put an integration layer between systems. Each system integrates once, with the layer, which handles translation, routing, retries and monitoring. Adding a system becomes one integration, not N.

Events where you can

Replace nightly batch transfers with events: when something meaningful happens, the source publishes it and interested systems react. This shrinks the gap between reality and what downstream systems believe — where a lot of errors live.

Observability is not optional

Every message and call logged with enough context to answer “did this reach the target system, and if not, why”. Alert on queue depth and error rates. A silently failing interface is the most expensive kind.
